Docent: Your Volunteer Guide to Rockland's Parks

Overview:
The Rockland County Trail Guide Docent Program was created in partnership with the County of Rockland’s Division of Environmental Resources, the Rockland County Youth Bureau’s AmeriCorps program and the Rockland County Department of Health’s Steps to a Healthier Rockland to train Rockland residents to lead guided park walks.

About the Docents:

The trained cadre of county trail guide docents are outdoor enthusiasts who want to share their love of nature and the ecology and history of Rockland County with other county residents. Docents have received over 10 hours of training and many are certified in CPR and first aid.  Docents are environmental stewards and help to raise awareness of our parks as environmental and recreational resources while leading organized group walks though county and state parks. The docents also serve to encourage good health practices for community residents.

The trail guide docents are easy to recognize in their green trail guide docent t-shirt, jacket and sun hat. They foster a pleasant, friendly atmosphere on each walk they lead.  In addition, there is a docent on each walk who is designated as a “sweep”, someone who makes sure no one gets left behind on a walk.

What is a Docent:
A docent is a knowledgeable trail guide trained to lead park walks.
