Restaurant Guests Just Ask for Healthier Choices with a Heart!
The Just Ask Us! restaurant program was introduced to Rockland County in the summer of 2005 to increase the availability and awareness of healthier food choices. The initiative has worked with local restaurants across the county to encourage them to highlight healthier menu options - and it is working!

At the Palisades Mall: You're Already Here... Walk It!
Rockland County Walks: Did You Take a Walk Today?

Steps to a Healthier Rockland has helped to engaged thousands of residents in walking. The program
offers several opportunities for residents to walk. Residents can request a free pedometer to walk on their own, walk at the Palisades Center with the Walk It! program, participate in a series of guided walks offered at county parks with trained Rockland County Trail Guide Docents leading the way, and be apart of an interactive, family-friendly park walking program
known as RC Walks Trail Tracker.

A Success Story!
Do I? Don't I? Finding You're At Risk is Step One!

Rockland County’s Diabetes Program, part of Steps to a Healthier Rockland, has made great inroads dealing with diabetes, the incidence of which has increased dramatically. The percentage of adults over 18 in Rockland County who say they have been told by their doctor that they have diabetes increased from 5.8% to 7.3% in two short years. Although this might not appear to be a positive change, only about a third of adults with diabetes know they have it. One of the goals of Steps is to increase identification of residents with diabetes and pre-diabetes.

Physical Activity Gets Kids Brains Moving!

Steps to a Healthier Rockland worked with all nine of the county's school districts to strengthen health promotion by helping schools better coordinate their health programming and by providing professional development opportunities for staff. Steps also helped school districts prepare wellness policies to improve physical activity and food choices.

BE TOBACCO FREE - Put It Out Rockland!
Young Lungs Are Saying: "We Wanna Be Tobacco Free!"

It is now four years since the Be Tobacco Free program of Steps to a Healthier Rockland started its outreach to the community. Such familiar programs and partners, including Put It Out Rockland, Reality Check, POW'R Against Tobacco Coalition, and the Rockland County Parks Department, have become part and parcel of our communal effort to curb the effects of tobacco on our health.  Young Lungs At Play!,  was created in Rockland to prevent exposure to tobacco in outdoor play spaces.

Choose to Lose! & Rockland Teens and Adults Go for the "Positive Image"
Steps to a Healthier Rockland assisted in the development of two community-based weight loss programs to "weighed in" on the endemic problem of overweight and obesity in our county. It is an indictment on our society that almost 60% of adults and 25% of adolescents are overweight.

Rockland Companies Agree: "Healthier Worksites, Means Healthier Workers!"

The Healthier Worksites, Healthier Workers program assists Rockland County worksites improve their employees' health and wellness. Worksite wellness programs have been shown to reduce employee stress, health care costs, and absenteeism while increasing productivity, morale, and loyalty.

Over the past four years, the face of chronic disease prevention in Rockland County has changed- for the better. Targeting three major chronic diseases-diabetes, obesity, and asthma and their underlying risk factors of physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and tobacco use and exposure, Steps to a Healthier Rockland is improving the lives of people throughout the county.
