Eat Together – Understanding the Importance of the Family Meal:  Did you know:  Research suggest sharing a meal regularly can boost children’s health and wellbeing, reducing the likelihood that they’ll become obese or use drugs, and increases the chance that they will do well in school.  Evidenced-based research from national health organizations (e.g., American Heart Association and the National Association on Addiction and Substance Abuse) as well as influential media (e.g., Time Magazine and USA Today) and well known registered dietitian and author, Ellyn Satter, is included to support the recommendation to make family meals a priority.

The Basics of Caring for Children with Diabetes:  Caregivers learn about the formation of a Diabetes Medical Management Plan, including interdisciplinary partners (i.e. the doctor, school nurse, parent) as being the priority for any child with diabetes.  Information regarding how to manage both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in children is the focus of the program.  This is a “must” for all staff working in school and childcare settings who have children with diabetes under their care.  Information from the NY State Department of Health Chronic Disease Series is incorporated into this program.

The Basics of Diabetes Care:  Adults with diabete learn to use Diabetes Self-Management Tools.  The keys to balancing diabetes (including nutrition, medication and exercise) are discussed.  Participants will gain an understanding of the tools to manage their chronic disease.  Information from the American Diabetes Association’s Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes has been incorporated into this discussion.

Are You Comfortable in Your Jeans?:  Teenagers discuss body image, physical appearance, and self-esteem in a comfortable group setting.  Participants learn about society's influence on eating habits and the development of eating disorders.  Evidenced-based information from registered dietitian, Mary Abbott Hess and author Anne Elise Hunt, provided information for the development of this session.
